What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have specialised training in psychiatry and mental health. As medical doctors, they are able to prescribe medication and provide psychotherapy.

Psychologists have specialised knowledge in human behaviour and psychotherapy. Psychologists do not prescribe medication. Psychologists must complete a minimum of 4 years undergraduate study, and a further 2 years in either a postgraduate degree or supervised practice, before gaining registration. “Psychologist” is a protected title.

Both Psychiatrists and Psychologist are registered by legislation with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist, however if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate, a referral is necessary.

If you do not wish to obtain a referral a proportion of your fees may be redeemable from your private health insurer, depending on your health cover.

What is a Referral/Mental Health Care Plan?

Psychologists are registered providers under the Medicare, Better Access to Mental Health Scheme, which means that eligible clients can claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions (with a referral from a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician), within a calendar year (Jan-Dec).

How many sessions will I need?

All people and all problems are unique. We do not use a ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy, and so the number of sessions will be tailored to your presenting concerns and personal goals. Your therapist will take the time to get to know you to customise your therapy appropriately.

You will be introduced to your therapist and provided the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and be

During your initial appointment your psychologist will aim to gain a detailed understanding of you and your needs, which is important so that subsequent sessions are relevant and helpful to you. At the end of your session you may discuss with your therapist how many sessions may be required to reach your goals and book in your next session at reception. It is important to remember that these sessions are especially for you, and so we always endeavour to create an environment that allows you to identify and talk about the issues important to you.
